Political YouTube thumbnails: what works
The political thumbnails that get clicked have one subject, a real reaction face, a phrase of three words or fewer, strong contrast on a phone screen, and a title that adds information instead of repeating the image.
The rules we follow
- One idea. A viewer should get it in one second.
- A real face. Your genuine reaction beats a stock pose.
- Short text. Three words or fewer, big enough to read on a phone.
- Contrast. Bright subject, darker background.
- Pair it with the title. The title adds what the image can't show.
- Stay truthful. Don't promise something the video doesn't deliver; viewers leave and the algorithm notices.
Test and learn
Compare click-through rates between videos with similar topics. Keep the styles that win and drop the ones that don't.
